What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Understanding EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals reprocess distressing memories and alleviate the emotional pain associated with them. It can be a powerful tool that allows us to work through negative belief systems that no longer serve us in order to get to the core of who we are, not just what’s happened to us.
Think of your brain like a filing system. Sometimes, especially when something distressing or traumatic happens, certain memories or emotions don’t get properly filed away. They stay messy, causing distress or anxiety. EMDR helps the brain and body process stuck emotions and memories, filing them where they need to go to make them feel less overwhelming. We can often feel stuck between what we know and what we feel, in our bodies and in our relationships. EMDR allows us to safely do the deeper work, helping to bridge the gap between.

The EMDR Process

In sessions, this may look like exploring personal histories, establishing safety and developing grounding skills, understanding current belief systems, and developing new belief systems that better serve us. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, or back-and-forth sensory input, allowing both sides of the brain to work together to facilitate healing, often through guided eye movements, sounds, or tapping. EMDR can be used both in person and in virtual sessions.
